Job Title: Software Engineer
Salary: £31,931 - £34,709 (Band D) or £39,748-£44,166 (Band E) gross per annum dependent on experience*

Reports To: Software Systems Development Manager 
Contract Type: 4 x Open Ended Positions

The National Quantum Computing Centre is a £93m UKRI investment over 5 years based at the Harwell Campus. This is a strategic element within the overall £1bn, 10 year investment into Quantum Technologies made by the UK since 2014.

Quantum computing operates in a fundamentally different way to conventional or classical computers. It has the potential to unlock unprecedented parallel processing and consequently create a step change in computing power. By harnessing and exploiting this capability the UK has an ambition to become the world’s first quantum ready nation. Our effort is part of a global race with significant international investment in hardware, software and skills. Recruiting and retaining top talent is of key importance. The long term impact on society and the economy is potentially huge with projected global market impact of over £350bn by 2050.

The primary purpose of the NQCC is to fill a key gap in the research and innovation landscape addressing the challenge of scaling quantum computing. However, this technology is immature and extensive development work is needed to scale the fundamental science to provide usable computing systems.

The NQCC's initial 5 years will focus on developing a Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) machine to demonstrate the technology as well as software, algorithm and applications development. The longer term aim is to scale the technology towards an error and noise free fault tolerant machine capability with benchmarking and verification demonstrated in collaboration with UK and international partners. The NQCC will give assured and direct access to early prototype machines to developers and promote the formation of a strong UK-based quantum computing supply chain.

About the Role: 

You will work as part of the Software and Control Systems Group within the Research function alongside hardware and applications developers. Utilizing your skills in software and systems architecture robust and re-usable digital assets will be rapidly deployed to meet the goals of the NQCC enabling the delivery of scalable quantum computing capabilities against our technology roadmap.

Key projects will include hardware stabilization, hardware optimized compiler performance, error mitigation and benchmarking and verification protocols.

The successful candidate must exhibit a pragmatic attitude towards the work of others, particularly in a collaborative environment, whilst having a good eye for detail interpreting and presenting technical performance data.

Deep technical expertise in quantum computing is not essential as part of the role but would be seen as valuable.

Project support is provided via Quality Assurance, Monitoring & Evaluation, Procurement and Project Leader support staff within the Operations team as well as firmware, electronics and device specialists across the hardware team as well as external expertise.

Not only is this an exciting role at the forefront of science and technology, the candidate will also gain excellent experience of large-scale systems integration across a variety of collaborations in the quantum computing eco-system.

The role will include elements of the following:
•    Developing flexible software and control architecture to enable a variety of hardware platforms and applications.
•    Developing full-stack software applications involving client, server and data tiers.
•    Working closely with colleagues across the Centre to implement the architecture and deploy services.
•    Identifying appropriate HPC, data analytics and cognitive computing technologies and designing appropriate technology solutions.
•    Making site visits to commercial and academic partners.
•    Publishing non-confidential results.
•    Promoting and demonstrating best practice software development across the NQCC including design, development, testing & maintenance.
•    Carry out quality checks and inspection on site and at supplier premises.
•    Present work at internal and external meetings both within the UK and internationally.
•    Working within the Divisions ISO9001 Quality Management System.
•    Driving Continuous Improvement within the Centre.

Person Specification:

This role requires someone who can work well as part of a multidisciplinary team, but also demonstrate autonomy within their area of responsibility. You will be proactive, self-motivated and able to work in a dynamic environment. You will be able to work/travel within the UK and overseas as and when required to attend international meetings with collaborators.

Essential – Educated to a to degree level or relevant experience in a computing related discipline. (S&I)

Desirable –

o    Experience in development, test and deployment of quantum devices (S&I)
