The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) is a leading centre of expertise in data-intensive science, and home to sophisticated high-performance computers. It is one of the largest departments of its kind with well over 200 computational scientists, software engineers and project support staff – and it is steadily growing as the demand for more research data management, storage and analytics increases! SCD supports some of the UK’s most advanced scientific facilities and provides the tools that enable the scientific community to discover and deliver vital research.  

Do you have a passion in both science communication and website design, development and maintenance? A major focus of this role to ensure the Scientific Computing Department’s website is updated and maintained. This will mean working with teams at all levels to create a website structure and new content that is suitable for a range of audiences. 

There will be opportunities to develop creativity and writing skills as well as working within a small team that plays a major role in promoting the technology and expertise we provide in support of national and international science through different channels. These include websites, internal newsletters, specialist and national media, conferences and exhibitions, and educational activities. 

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Keep SCD's website updated, maintained and fit for purpose. This will include interaction and liaison with staff from across the council to develop and update content, to so that the website is accessible to all people and to make any layout changes that may be required 
  • Researching and presenting our science through written, verbal and visual channels 
  • Helping to plan and deliver a strong departmental presence at events, such as Supercomputing Conferences 
  • Supporting public engagement activities, such as coding with school children or helping with work experience students 

In order to apply for this role you must have:  

Essential:  

  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry 
  • Right to live and work in the UK 
  • GCSE English or equivalent  
  • Passion for science and science communication 
  • Passion for website development – both content and structural aspects  
  • Excellent writing skills  
  • Good organisational skills  
  • Demonstrate good team working capabilities  
  • The willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical  
  • Open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned to them  

Desirable:  

  • A-levels or equivalent in Science and English 
  • Experience in website design  
  • Experience in graphic design, or video/audio production  
  • Experience in writing for different audiences
