In the Scientific Computing Department (SCD), we research, develop and support leading edge scientific software and high-performance computational and data storage infrastructures to perform and support elite science. We help research communities to store and transfer research data from small to large scale and provide software to analyse, simulate, visualise and locate research data.

The Data and Software Engineering Group (DSEG) designs, implements and supports a wide range of software enabling researchers to catalogue and discover their experimental data; capture analysis workflows; make links between data, publications and software and support the research software development lifecycle. It also maintains infrastructure required for version control and continuous integration for Research Software!

The technologies used in DSEG include: Java, Python, JavaScript (React framework), C#, (RESTful) web services, JSON, virtualisation, automation techniques and tools as well as enterprise databases such as Oracle and MySQL, applications servers such as IIS and Payara, enterprise technologies such as ActiveMQ, and a wide range of Linux and Windows technologies. 

The placement will involve tasks supplying to one or more of the projects undertaken by the Data & Software Engineering Group, which is a multi-disciplinary, diverse and inclusive team. You will interact with software engineers, project managers, STFC scientists and end-users of our systems!
Some of the tasks will revolve around software development and related activities, with the support from members of the group and receiving training as required, such as:

  • Gain familiarity with existing software solutions
  • Engage with partners to determine requirements
  • Contribute to software development tasks applying standard methodologies (e.g. version control, unit and end-to-end testing, continuous integration, coding conventions)
  • Contribute to systems deployment and operational tasks
  • Contribute to system design and architecture discussions
  • Investigate solutions for specific problems and/or features
  • Contribute to installation and deployment tasks as needed.

The placement may also involve contributions to the preparation and delivery of technical training workshops.

Essential Criteria:

  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry
  • Right to live and work in the UK
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Demonstrate good team working capabilities 
  • Willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical 
  • Open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned to them 
  • Excellent knowledge of at least one programming language such as Java/C#, Python, JavaScript or similar

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of version control systems 
  • Good knowledge of relational and/or noSQL databases
  • Comfortable using web development technologies or frameworks 
  • Good knowledge of software engineering methodologies and automation
