About the role

We work on a wide range of problems from novel device modelling, complex analogue circuits, reprogrammable FPGA based systems to large digital ICs implemented at very small transistor geometries. 

Whatever your specific interest, analogue, digital, devices etc. you will gain valuable experience and be allowed to demonstrate your initiative and apply your skills to real microelectronics problems. 

If future opportunities exist, you may be able to return to STFC as an industrial placement student or after completion of your studies, return as a Graduate Microelectronics Engineer. If you love microelectronics, problem solving, and the idea of making an impact on leading-edge microelectronics research, then we encourage you to apply.

To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:

Essential criteria:

  • Are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • You are studying a relevant undergraduate degree such as Electronic Engineering or similar and likely to achieve a minimum of a 2:1 on graduation
  • Have a minimum of three A-levels at grade C or above one of which must be mathematics, or alternative qualifications of an equivalent level
  • Have good understanding of fundamental basic analogue and digital electronic circuits
  • Enjoy solving challenging electronic engineering problems and have a genuine interest in discovering more about silicon chips and microelectronics design tools
  • Have relevant university projects or course work and a desire to further improve your understanding of microelectronics chip design
  • Conscientious, reliable and hardworking with good interpersonal skills and the ability to identify and communicate relevant technical information
