The High Power Targets Group is at the forefront of the development of particle accelerator targets and supporting systems for research applications ranging from spallation neutron sources to high energy physics experiments! The group has a history of working very closely with international accelerator laboratories including Fermilab (USA), CERN (Europe) and J-PARC (Japan), in addition to supporting STFC’s in house facilities. 

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities  

The primary duties will be to support the thermal/mechanical analysis and design of accelerator targets and related systems, typically as part of a multidisciplinary team. The group operates a portfolio of projects that vary in scope from initial design development right through to the procurement and commissioning of hardware. In this context the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their design and analysis skills, supported by our core team of experienced engineers. 

This placement will include duties such as: 

  • Perform mechanical and thermal analyses of accelerator targets and related systems, using a wide variety of tools (eg, Matlab, ANSYS and CFX) 
  • Use 3D CAD software (e.g. Solid Edge) to develop design solutions from initial concepts through to detailed engineering designs 
  • Assist with the physical assembly of components and systems 
  • Prepare reports and oral presentations 
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team 

In order to apply for this role you must have:  


  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry  
  • Right to live and work in the UK  
  • Basic knowledge of engineering analysis, materials, and manufacturing techniques 
  • Clear and logical approach to solving technical problems 
  • Good written and oral communication skills.  
  • Good interpersonal skills  


  • Basic knowledge of CAD modelling and/or Finite Element Analysis software  
  • Basic technical knowledge of engineering analysis, including fluid, thermal, and mechanical analysis  
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
