STFC Innovation is the technology transfer department of STFC.  Working as part of the Business and Innovation Directorate, it is responsible for the commercialisation and transfer of technology from the National Labourites to Industry.  Our facilities provide a range of research techniques using neutrons, muons, lasers and x-rays, and high performance computing, where the complex analysis of large data and the expertise of our engineers and scientists cover a broad range of STEM disciplines.  It is the role of the Innovation Team to work with the 1000 plus laboratories staff to identify novel technologies and capabilities that have an application outside of a research environment. Then to develop these as business opportunities, either as a new company or as a licence to an existing organisation. Through technology transfer, the Innovation Department aims to deliver economic growth and societal impact as well as maximise the return on public investment.  

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

As an Innovation Analyst, you will interact with the engineers and scientists within the STFC to understand their research and to determine whether there is any commercial potential.  You will research the novelty behind an invention, the potential market, and whether there are any competing technologies. You will present commercialisation options to the Innovation team and contribute to the business case for technology exploitation.  You will have a portfolio of projects that will require both commercial and technical development and you will help secure funding to your projects to enable them to progress.  This role requires extensive communication with technical staff and all levels of personnel from across the organisation. There will be a requirement for occasional travel to other STFC sites and stakeholders’ locations.

In order to apply for this role you must have:

  • Obtained your first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2019, 2020 or be due to receive it in 2021
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK

  • Commercial outlook and attitude 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Ability to communicate clearly with scientific team and quickly understand technical concepts 
  • Ability to present opportunities to non-technical audiences 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Business, economics or management electives/course
  • Industrial or innovation-based work experience 
  • Knowledge of project management principles 
  • Ability to describe intellectual property rights 
  • An understanding of technology transfer 
  • A keen interest in the science performed at STFC
