Science and Technology Facilities Council

STFC Innovation is the technology transfer unit of STFC. Working as part of the Business and Innovation Directorate, it is responsible for the commercialisation and transfer of technology from the National Labourites to Industry.

Our facilities provide a range of research techniques using neutrons, muons, lasers and x-rays, and high-performance computing, where the complex analysis of large data and the expertise of our engineers and scientists cover a broad range of STEM fields. It is the role of the Innovation Team to work with STFC scientists and engineers across the UK to capture the IP of an initial spark and take it through to patent, licence or spin-out - handling the journey end-to-end! Through technology transfer, the Innovation Team seeks to deliver economic growth and societal impact as well as maximise the return on public investment.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities

As an Innovation Analyst, you will interact with the engineers and scientists within the STFC to understand their research and to determine whether there is any commercial potential. You will contribute to researching the novelty behind an invention to help determine the intellectual property (IP), the potential market or future applications, and whether there are any competing technologies. You will support the analysis of commercialisation and IP options for STFC innovations and contribute to the business case and IP strategy for their exploitation.

Alongside your manager as a guide, you will have a portfolio of projects that will require both commercial and technical development and you will help secure funding to your projects to enable them to progress. This role requires extensive communication with technical staff and all levels of personnel from across the organisation. There will be a requirement for occasional travel to other STFC sites and partners’ locations.
