Based at the STFC Daresbury Laboratory, ASTeC is the UK's centre of expertise for accelerator science and technology. ASTeC studies all aspects of the science and technology of charged particle accelerators, ranging from large scale international and national research facilities, through to specialised industrial and medical applications.

ASTeC is responsible for the delivery of a number of high profile superconducting radio frequency (SRF projects; the delivery of 88 high beta SRF cavities to the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Sweden, the delivery of 3 high-beta cryomodules including SRF cavities to FermiLab in the US, and the delivery of 6 Crab Cavity Cryomodules for Hi-Lumi Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN. Additionally, STFC is developing the potential design for an X-ray Free Electron Laser accelerator, UK-XFEL.

For these programmes the RF and Cryogenics Group within ASTeC is a key contributor to these programmes providing research on both normal and superconducting accelerating technologies in support of these and many other projects. The group is also engaged in the development of associated technologies such as SRF thin films.

Thus many opportunities exist for a well-motivated candidate to work with the team of scientists, engineers and academic collaborators in developing new computational and data science systems whilst also helping to build the next generation of world-class ‘Big Science’ particle accelerators.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

The main responsibility for the graduate SRF Engineer will be to work with a team of engineers in the delivery of the high-beta SRF cavities required for the cryomodules to be supplied into the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) at FermiLab. Additionally responsibilities will be to provide technical support for the ESS and HL-LHC projects as well as developing ASTeC’s SRF capabilities for future programmes such as UK-XFEL. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Assist in the delivery of SRF cavities from industry
  • Liaising with the suppliers, customers, and STFC experts
  • Assist in the monitoring  of cavity adherence to the specification
  • Assist with cavity qualification testing
  • Assist with the development of SRF and test system capabilities
  • Assist in the investigation of technical cavity problems
  • Provision of reports
  • The role will require good communication skills, and an individual who is enthusiastic to work in a world-class leading environment.

In order to apply for this role you must have:

  • Obtained your first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2019, 2020 or be due to receive it in 2021
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK

Essential Criteria:   

  • Physics, Electrical, Electronics, or Engineering background 
  • Keen practical skills, including enthusiasm for hands-on experimental work 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Willingness to work in interdisciplinary areas 
  • Enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals 
  • Good communication skills, particularly written and oral communication 
  • Experienced with MS Office 

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of RF and/or superconducting RF 
  • Experience with low temperature systems 
  • Experience with superconducting systems 
  • Practical electronics skills 
  • Experience with CAD 
  • Experience with FEA packages
