Science and Technology Facilities Council

At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) you belong to a community of experts who are driving science and technology forward. Our incredible diversity of research, technology and engineering projects truly fire the imagination and lead to real-world solutions which shape societies and transform lives.

Working at the forefront of scientific endeavor is only possible with dedicated project managers, scientists and engineering staff that are capable of turning scientific objectives into reality.

STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) undertakes particle accelerator design and operation for current and future ‘Big Science’ facilities. We work on numerous high profile projects with national and international partners, including CERN, Fermilab, and the European Spallation Source. The Radio Frequency and Cryogenics group within ASTeC designs, builds, develops and supports advanced RF and cryogenic systems for high-energy particle accelerators. RF systems are the backbone of our particle accelerators, providing the energy needed by the particle beam to reach relativistic speeds.

ASTeC is a member of the Cockcroft Institute: a partnership between STFC and the universities of Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester and Strathclyde, devoted to the development and construction of particle accelerators for pure and applied research. The institute provides the intellectual focus, educational infrastructure and essential scientific and technological facilities for UK accelerator science and technology development.

We are currently working on a number of projects requiring RF expertise such as the next generation accelerator test facility, the Compact Linear Accelerator for Research and Applications, hosted at Daresbury Laboratory which provides a platform for much of the underpinning research and development for a future UK X-ray laser facility. Other significant projects include testing superconducting RF cavities for the European Spallation Source, the provision of accelerator cryomodules for the Proton Improvement Plan upgrade at Fermilab, and the delivery of accelerator cryomodules for the forthcoming High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Additionally, we are heavily involved in the operation of a compact electron accelerator for healthcare and industrial applications.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities

You will be part of a small team responsible for the design, development, and implementation of high power RF systems for our various particle accelerator projects and take part in:-

  • Design of RF structures (RF guns, cavities, and waveguide systems)
  • Collaboration with other laboratories and fabrication companies to facilitate the delivery of RF systems
  • Commissioning, conditioning and operation of RF systems to support the operation of the accelerator facilities
  • Supporting the development of new RF cavity technologies and manufacturing techniques

You will work closely with other RF engineers and scientists, mechanical designers and external contractors to continuously develop and improve these high power RF systems.

In order to apply for the role you must have

  • Obtained first degree bachelors or Integrated Masters, (not doctorate) in Electrical, Electronics, Physics or relevant subject in either 2020, 2021 or be due to receive it in 2022
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK
  • Can demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Effective team working skills.
  • Can demonstrate relevant broad engineering and physics knowledge

  • Hands on practical skills (e.g. workshop / laboratory experience)
  • Computer programming skills
