ISIS is a world-leading centre for research located at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the UK. The role will be within the Electronics and Embedded Systems section of the Accelerator Controls group, which is responsible for the control of the high intensity proton source synchrotron accelerator.

The Electronics and Embedded Systems section are responsible for the design, development and maintenance of electronics interface cards and associated embedded systems that form part of the whole ISIS Controls system.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team involved in the design, manufacturing, test and installation of electronic equipment for the ISIS accelerator.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Designing analogue and digital electronic systems.
  • Writing software to support these systems and provide integration with the ISIS Controls System.
  • Work with accelerator physicists and engineers to advise on the best solutions for projects, taking into account budgetary or time constraints.
  • Upgrading legacy systems and equipment.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of electronic systems and related hardware within the accelerator environment. This will require the candidate to become a monitored radiation worker.
  • UK and overseas travel will be required for conferences and collaboration work.

In order to apply for this role you must have:

  • Obtained your first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2019, 2020 or be due to receive it in 2021
  • Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above
  • The right to live and work in the UK

Essential Criteria:   

The candidate should demonstrate strong knowledge/experience in at least one of the following subjects:

  • Digital electronics/embedded systems – design of digital, programmable logic (e.g. FPGAs) and/or microcontroller based designs and related programming languages 
  • Analogue electronics – design, simulation and testing of circuits involving operational amplifiers, active/passive filters, signal conditioning, etc. 
  • Electronic simulation packages (analogue/digital)
  • The candidate will be required to become a monitored radiation worker
  • Good verbal communication skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • MSc / MEng in Electronic Engineering or related discipline
  • Industry work experience in design and manufacturing work (Schematic/PCB design/layout, assembly, testing, calibration, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Embedded Systems, in particular Compact PCI/PCI architecture
  • Knowledge of VHDL for FPGA design and verification
  • Experience of programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Python)
  • Knowledge of transducers/sensors, motion control or mechanical design
  • Proven track record working as part of a team
