Here in the Electronic System Design Group (ESDG) at STFC, we are looking forward to give a summer placement student to opportunity to come and join the team for a 10-week placement.

ESDG specialises in the design of advanced electronic systems for data acquisition. The electronic systems produced by ESDG are used to support numerous, internationally renowned, big science experiment, including: the European Spallation Source (ESS), the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

The successful candidate will develop hardware description code targeting field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The placement will expose the candidate to the full FPGA design process, including opportunities to verify their firmware using state of the art FPGA devices and computer networking hardware.

Successful completion of this project will be made possible by the encouraging environment offered by ESDG.

About the role

Within this placement, responsibilities will also include:

  • To complete all required training and otherwise meet the requirements of the management systems in place
  • To engage fully with the specified programme of work
  • To engage with the wider STFC community where possible

To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:

Essential criteria:

  • Are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
  • Have a minimum of three A-levels at grade C/4 or above one of which must be mathematics, or alternative qualifications of an equivalent level
  • Have relevant university projects or course work that gives a good understanding of basic digital electronics and semiconductor device fundamentals
  • Can answer foundational questions on digital electronics
  • Have university level tuition or experience in computer programming
  • Have good interpersonal skills, and so can communicate relevant technical information to colleagues
  • Can work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating an ability to be proactive and self-motivated
  • Previous experience or awareness of FPGA systems and/or hardware description languages

Desirable criteria:

  • Previous experience with LINUX operating systems
  • Previous object-oriented programming experience
