We are looking for a hardworking industrial placement student to join the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) at Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire! 

The successful candidate will help to deliver machine learning to optimise and control the performance of femtosecond laser systems.  

Looking to be supported during a placement? Support will be provided by scientists from the Femtosecond Lasers and Timing (FLT) Group; a team specialising in the development of laser, electronic and optoelectronic technology for particle accelerators! 

Throughout the placement you will see your work implemented in specialist FLT laboratory facilities, and work with real-time data generated by operational systems. 

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities  

  • Making machine learning models for optimisation and control, physics simulations, data analysis, fault prediction 
  • Generating software for data acquisition and device control 
  • Developing skills alongside machine learning specialists from across ASTeC 
  • Communicating work within ASTeC and contributing to the STFC Machine Learning for Accelerators Interest Group  

In order to apply for this role you must have:  

Essential:  

  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry  
  • Right to live and work in the UK  
  • Studying towards a degree in a relevant subject area (e.g., Computer Science, Physics)  
  • Proficiency with scientific programming language including Python  
  • Understanding of machine learning techniques (e.g., neural networks, Bayesian optimisation)  
  • Understanding of signal processing techniques (e.g., Fourier transform)  
  • Demonstrable communication, organisation, and team-working skills
  • Demonstrable problem solving skills
