Job Title: Bio Informatics Specialist
Salary: £39,748 - £44,166 gross per annum*
Banding: UKRI Band E
Location: Daresbury Laboratory- Warrington OR Rutherford Appleton Laboratory- Didcot
Contract Type: 3 Year Fixed Term Contract

About the Role

We have an opportunity for a bioinformatics specialist with significant experience in computational omics and/or systems biology to join the team at the STFC Hartree Centre. The role will focus on leading research and development projects aligned with the Hartree Centre’s strategic areas where we are developing a number of digital capabilities (including data analytics, modelling, and simulation) to address a broad variety industry, economic and societal challenges. Specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to lead the development of new capabilities for (meta-) omics; in the first instance developing a tool for prediction of phenotypes using metagenomic, metabolomics, meta-transcriptomic and clinical data. Curation and integration of (meta-) omics datasets will be core to the role. Other responsibilities may include: 

  • Leading the delivery of high-profile projects with industry and government organisations. Associated with the technical areas defined by the role.  
  • Helping industry partners (a) understand how to analyze and integrate their data using machine learning and AI, (b) integrate hierarchical and multilevel modelling approaches that enable efficient integration of novel AI methods in their workflows.   
  • Leading the delivery of high-profile projects with industry and government organisations. Associated with the technical areas defined by the role.  
  • Attracting new research opportunities and collaborations with external partners including academia and industry.  
  • Conducting research projects, engagement in scientific collaborations, as well as generic bioinformatics and data analysis support.  
  • Project management across a range of project sizes and types, typically involving members from other groups within Hartree (including Research Software Engineering, HPC and Data Science), Industry or Government organisations ensuring co-ordination of resources to  key  deadlines.  
  • Increasing the Hartree Centre team remit through development of new capabilities and areas of expertise applicable to industry, economic and societal challenges.    
  • Leading development of work plans for specific Hartree Centre industry engagement projects.   
  • Leading project and grant applications for funding from national and international competitions.  

Person Specification

We are seeking adaptable individuals who can, and are, interested in applying themselves to multiple areas including: coding and scripting; metagenomics and metatranscriptomics analyses; high-throughput sequencing, proteomics and/or metabolomics data acquisition and analysis; multi-omics data integration; machine learning methods and approaches; mathematical modelling (e.g. MatLab); using compute clusters and pipelines of batch jobs and who may have prior experience with developing parameter sets or force-fields.  

You should have a broad interest in multidisciplinary applications. A high level of drive, enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals is anticipated. A desire to work on high paced and highly varied projects is essential.

  • A Ph.D. degree (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, computational biology or related subjects, preferably with emphasis on functional microbial multi-omic data analysis (S)



  • Demonstrable experience in scripting such as Python or R or programming such as Perl, Fortran, C++ (along with a background working in a Unix/Linux type environment) (S&I)
  • Experience with large-scale data management and analysis (S)  
  • Experience in applying mathematics & statistical methods to complex challenges e.g. using Python, R or MatLab (S)  
  • Experience working solving business/industry type challenges with data (S&I)  
  • General knowledge of and/or experience with machine learning and AI methods (S&I)  
  • Ability to work at the interface between life sciences and data analysis / informatics (S&I)  
  • Willingness to learn new skills/tools/technologies and programming languages as projects require (S&I)  
  • Excellent communication skills ensuring the effective collaboration with a diverse audience from both a technical and non-technical (S&I)  
  • Good time management and ability to deliver against defined work plans (S&I)  


  • Experience with development of machine learning/AI models in a programming language such as Python (Tensorflow, Keras, scikit-learn) (S)
  • Experience of working as a member of project teams, preferably on software or cross-disciplinary projects (S&I)  
  • Experience of data visualization (S&I)  
  • Experience of image processing methods, such as convolutional neural networks (S&I)  
  • Knowledge of good coding and practice, for example version control or test-driven development (S&I)  
  • Advanced skills in a high-level programming language (>2 years of experience) (S)  
  • Excellent influencing and presentation skills and able to proactively listen to capture user requirements (S&I) 
  • Able to travel in the UK and occasionally abroad (S&I)
