The ISIS Synchrotron group is responsible for the operation, optimisation, development, and upgrading of the ISIS accelerators. An essential part of this work is R&D into high intensity limitations of proton rings, backed up by experimental and simulation studies, in particular the design of the future ISIS-II facility. In this placement the candidate will develop machine models, contribute to theoretical machine designs, as well as gain practical experience participating in machine operations and diagnostic measurement periods. 

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Implement python-based simulations of the existing ISIS synchrotron and multiple ISIS-II accelerator design options using the group’s accelerator simulation framework. 
  • Maintain and develop the accelerator simulation framework as required in order to support the group in the next design phase of the ISIS-II facility. 
  • After an introductory period, tackle projects as required in order to contribute to the next design phase of the ISIS-II facility, for example: 
  • Implementing physics processes in the existing model 
  • Investigating failure or error scenarios 
  • Taking measurements on the existing accelerators to benchmark codes 
  • Transfer legacy models to updated Git-based accelerator simulation framework and implement methods to be available to all members of the group 
  • Develop and implement methods of testing the accelerator simulation framework for future-proofing and bug resilience 
  • Communicate regularly with the group, assessing their needs and updating them with improvements made to the accelerator simulation framework and/or ISIS-II designs

In order to apply for this role you must have:  


  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate physics degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry  
  • Right to live and work in the UK  
  • Good communication and problem solving skills  
  • A genuine interest and passion for physics  
  • Ability to tackle numerical problems using computers, specifically using Python  
  • Self-motivated, able to assimilate large amounts of sophisticated information and apply relevant parts in practice, knows when to ask for help  
  • Ability to work individually using own initiative and as part of a team  


  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (Linux, Mac, Windows)  
  • Familiarity with revision control software such as Git
