Science and Technology Facilities Council

The STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is home to several of the UK’s largest national science facilities. One of these – the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source – is based around a powerful proton accelerator. ISIS’s world-renowned Intense Beams Group is now developing a radically new particle accelerator that will enable a massive increase in beam power over the current facility. Further, the new technology has applications as diverse as high energy, medical and nuclear physics and the group is actively developing these applications.

Summary of Key Duties

The successful candidate will become a world expert in particle accelerators. They will learn the theoretical and practical underpinnings of particle accelerators. They will collaborate with colleagues in ISIS, the UK and beyond in the development of novel particle accelerator equipment and techniques.

  • Develop novel modelling capabilities for particle accelerators.
  • Perform computational simulations to understand, improve or design new accelerator components.
  • Contribute to the design, construction and installation of new particle accelerator equipment.
  • Take responsibility for commissioning and operating a wide variety of equipment.
  • Present technical reports and papers both internally and to international collaborators.
  • Professionally represent STFC’s work to the public, key stakeholders and international partners.
